Update: We will be slowly fading out our Habutai Silk Comforters. Our Tencel Silk Comforters will be taking its place. Why are we replacing our Habutai Silk Comforters with our Tencel Silk Comforters? Although our Habutai Silk Comforters are still a great product, we find that our Tencel Silk Comforters feel similar to Habutai but are much more durable and longer lasting.
Here at Summit Silk Bedding, we are constantly striving to improve our products. We will soon have in stock Tencel (lyocell) silk comforters. Now Avaliable! Here. To help give an idea why we are so excited about our new product, we have compiled some information regarding the Tencel fiber below. Please check back in October if you are interested in purchasing a Tencel silk comforter.
There has not been a new fiber in 30 years and even longer for a new natural fiber. Tencel is the first new natural fiber in over 3 decades. Tencelfiber comes from Nature. It is of botanic origin. Tencel is extracted from the raw material, wood. The fiber production process is proven to be extremely eco-friendly due to its closed loop system.
Tencel is manufactured but is not a synthetic fiber. Similar to other natural fibers, tencel is naturally biodegradable. It can be made into microfibers (very fine fibers), offering depth and body to fabrics creating luxurious drape. Short staple length fibers give a cotton-like look to fabrics. Long filament fibers give the finished fabric more silk-like qualities.
Tencel feels like silk, and drapes luxuriously. Compared to cotton, tencel wrinkles less, is softer, more absorbent, and much more resistant to ripping. Like other cellulosic fibers, it is breathable, absorbent, and very comfortable to wear. In fact, tencel is more absorbent than cotton or silk, but slightly less absorbent than wool, linen, or rayon. Tencel has good resiliency: it does not wrinkle as badly as rayon, cotton, or linen. Tencel is a stable a fiber as silk and better than cotton or linen. And it feels like nothing you have ever touched - it both feels and looks sensuous.

Human skin acts as a protective shell, regulating body temperature and maintaining water balance. Tencelsupports these body functions acting like a second skin. A subjective feeling of well-being depends considerably on moisture absorption and on surface structure of the fibers. Rougher fibers can lead to skin irritation. The extremely smooth surface of Tencelfeels soft and pleasant to the skin. The reason for the fine surface of the fiber is low fiber stiffness.
Comparison of the fiber surfaces makes the difference obvious. Tencelfiber has a smoother and more supple surface than wool or cotton. Wool tends to have a scaly surface, while cotton is irregular and rough.
When it comes to hygiene and the growth of bacteria, the inherent and natural properties of Tencel deliver a variety of benefits. Bacterial growth is prevented in a completely natural way. The perfect moisture management of the fiber is the key. When moisture is produced it is directly absorbed from the skin and transported to the inside of the fiber. Thus no water film is produced on the skin where bacteria could grow.
